Game Face: A New Book by UCSD Alum Erica Boeke
Original Air Date: 10-12-08
With writer, fashion critic, gourmet food pro, and UCSD alum Erica Boeke, talking about her new book Game Face: The Kick-Ass Guide for Women Who Love Pro Sports (co-authored with Chris De Benedetti), now available through Virgin Books, and her website featuring a stable of sports-minded writers and bloggers: Go Game Face. More than 45 million women tune into the NFL and 46 percent of the NBA fan base is female, but until now there’s never been a smart book about sports with a distinctly female point of view. Written with today's smart, savvy, passionate female sports fan in mind, Game Face: The Kick-Ass Guide for Women Who Love Pro Sports captures the stories behind the games, compelling stories about players’ lives, and often the lives of their wives and girlfriends (and sometimes their drug dealers and defense attorneys), covering the gamut from Dock Ellis’ 1970 LSD-inspired no-hitter against the San Diego Padres, to the Minnesota Vikings infamous 2005 cruise on Lake Minnetonka. Chapters tackle bad sports fashion, sports stars who tried and failed to become rock stars, race and sexuality in sports, how marketing is ruining (and saving) sports, and follows the authors as they navigate women's approach to enjoying professional sports. GameFace: The Kick-Ass Guide for Women Who Love Pro Sports is available in stores and on-line now.
